This is what community is about
We are delighted to introduce you to one of our newest Stockport workshops: Susie’s Sewing Group. Susie is one of our Stockport Ambassador Volunteers, who had the fantastic idea to start a sewing group, open to the local community.
The group is going from strength to strength, and it’s been amazing to see the projects that have been created. Participants are amending and improving the look of clothes as well as repurposing items such as old sweaters into cushion covers and turning tops into jackets.
When asked about the idea behind the Sewing Group, Susie replied: “I was in treatment and I thought I would like to give something back to the community by starting a sewing class. We are now recycling so people can buy charity clothes very cheaply and I can show them how to make them into something else, mend them or alter them, whilst spending time with a group of like-minded people who want to be in a warm and lovely environment.”
The group meets every Friday at the Olive Branch Community Hub, which has kindly provided the venue for free. Not only can you learn new skills, but you can also enjoy a cup of coffee while you’re at it!
Kirsty, one of the group members, said: “When I joined the group, I wanted to make a cushion cover, Susie showed me what to do and I did it, so now what was once a purple jumper is a cushion cover. It’s nice coming to the group, some of us have gone through recovery, some of us haven’t but it’s nice because we’re all bringing different things and talking about different things, everyone’s got different projects so we can learn from each other whilst working on our individual projects so it’s really good. Before joining the group, I wouldn’t have had a clue on how to recycle a jumper into anything else, but I have learned a lot so far, it’s just brilliant and Susie’s lovely, she’s amazing.”
We are so proud of the work that Susie and the group have achieved so far and we look forward to seeing what else they create.
