Good News Story from our Skills-Tu Life Course

Think Pieces

P has been unemployed for over 2 years after being made redundant from a long career in manufacturing. He attended our Skills-Tu Life course as part of the Restart programme with Jobs 22.

He was struggling with his mental health and had gone through tough times including periods of homelessness. In the first session, P and his Mentor focused on the barriers P faces with finding employment. Together, they discovered P’s reluctance to find employment was based around his lack of confidence and fear of rejection.

The remaining mentoring sessions focused on critical thinking skills and tools P could use to plan for job application outcomes. He realised albeit positive or negative, he had the ability to deal with any situation. P worked on his confidence through preparing for any outcome and having a plan in place to deal with setbacks by critically thinking about the risks involved and how to deal with them. He also worked with his Mentor to identify his transferrable skills and how they can be used in different jobs and sectors, giving P a new perspective of his own abilities and the confidence that he could apply for jobs and sectors he doesn’t have past experience.

On the final day of the course, P walked into the recruitment agency nearby to enquire. He was interviewed immediately and, using the transferrable skills learnt in his sessions, P was able to evidence he had the relevant skills and experience to fulfil the contract and has now started his new job.
